In fact, a single tobacco hornworm caterpillar can eat up to 40 tobacco leaves in just one week! While they may be big, hornworms are not considered to be dangerous to humans. This is due in part to the fact that they are voracious eaters and can consume a lot of food in a short period of time. While the size of a hornworm can vary depending on the species, all of them are considered to be fairly large caterpillars. ![]() For example, the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) can grow to be up to 4 inches long, while the tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) is usually only about 2.5 inches in length.
